The battle for dominance in the 3.5 Winchester disk drive market is getting rough and tough, and the latest entrant is Cardiff Peripheral Corp, a Carlsbad, California subsidiary of American Canadian Systems Inc. Cardiff claims that its new Classic line of 3.5 drives is 25% faster than anything else on the market, with a 20mS average seek time. It is also at the top end in terms of capacity, with the top-end model sporting 110Mb, the other two coming in at 44Mb and 68Mb. Power consumption is about 7 Watts, and the drives will be available first with ESDI interfaces; SCSI and ST412/506 versions are promised. The company will show the drives at Comdex/Fall at the end of the month and promises evaluation units for December. The pricing has not yet been announced.
