According to the suit, Card Activation seeks a royalty from TJX on the activation and processing of its gift cards. It also wants an injunction to stop the use of the cards until TJX receives a license to use the payment transaction technology owned by Card Activation. The lawsuit was filed on November 6, 2007 in US District Court in Chicago.
Card Activation has several similar suits pending in the same court against retailers such as Sears Holding, Walgreen, Barnes & Noble, Aeropostale, and OfficeMax. The company stated that it has sent over 400 letters to other retailers informing them of the patent violations.
