The respected National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride looks set to be sold by the government to the Yard subsidiary of CAP Group Plc – which hopes to change its handle to Sema Group in September. The intention of the Department of Trade & Industry is that Glasgow-based Yard should negotiate a joint takeover with the laboratory’s employees, who wanted to do an autonomous buyout. Yard is already talking to the 625 staff, and envisages their ending up with a 25% stake in the joint venture. Yard specialises in naval and marine consultancy, and already works with the laboratory, which operates on an annual grant from the government of UKP21m.
