The Canadian Supreme Court has upheld a previous court ruling that found that Apple Computer Inc’s ROM-based system software is eligible for copyright protection and dismissed an appeal by Mackintosh Computers Ltd and Microcom, makers of flashers’ macs, that ROM BIOS chips aren’t software eligible for copyright protection; the Supreme Court ruled that the programs embedded in silicon chips are a reproduction of the original programs written in assembly language and are thus protected by copyright.
