Canadian company Golden Fortune Investments Ltd has been awarded a 165.4 million yuan ($20m) initial order from China’s Ministry of Railways to provide wireless internet services in China.

The ministry was recently given the go-ahead from the State Council to set up a nationwide commercial telecommunications group to compete with China Telecom and China Unicom, using its extensive cable and microwave network as a framework.

Golden Fortune has set up a joint venture with railways subsidiary Nanjing Orient Railway Communications Co Ltd to bring appropriate wireless internet technology to China over the next three years, according the Canadian firm’s chief executive James Tong. The wireless solution has been chosen because it’s cheaper, better and faster than installing land lines, he said.

Golden Fortune has also entered into a strategic alliance with fellow Canadian company, WaveRider Communications Inc, which supplies hardware enabling corporate LANS to link up to internet hubs via a wireless bridge.

They also provide a last-mile solution product that uses wireless technology to link home users to the internet, Tong said.
