The Canadian PC market total shipments reached 1,483,034 units with a growth rate of 22.6% in unit volume in second quarter of 2010, according to a new research from IDC Canada.

Portable PC shipments grew by 25.4% year-over-year to 913,518 units, desktop PC shipments increased by 18.5% and reached 569,516 units in the second quarter of 2010.

IDC Canada said that Canadian PC market outperformed the overall worldwide PC market, which experienced 20.9% year-over-year growth for the second quarter.

HP maintained its top position in Canadian PC market with a 23.6% unit share. The company also led with 23.9% share of Desktop shipments and a 23.4% share of Portable shipments.

Acer held second place with a 19.7% share of total PC shipments, while Dell stood third with a 17.1% PC market share.

The market analyst said that consumer shipments continued to outpace the overall client PC market, growing 28.1% over 2Q09.

IDC Canada personal computing senior analyst Tim Brunt said that shipments of mininotebooks were down almost 168,000 units from their high in the fourth quarter of 2009 and continued to slow in 2Q10.

"While mininotebooks continue to falter, the ultraportable category continues to grow. Ultraportables, a category that includes tablet PCs, grew at 203.6% year-over-year," Brunt said.
