Are Linux distributors Caldera and Red Hat in negotiations over a merger? Caldera spokesperson Laura Kenner says only: There is no substantial evidence for that rumor. We’re not commenting. Even so, the mere suggestion in Spencer Catt’s column in PC Week has caught the imagination of the free software community and sparked debate at open source watering hole slashdot.org. Though Linux is technically free software, Caldera and Red Hat both sell distributions and provide technical support. If they combined their forces, the companies could amplify the operating system’s already runaway success.
