Computer Associates International Inc president Charles Wang and Sun Microsystems Inc president Scott McNealy are to make a joint announcement today, and the expectation is that Computer Auto’s Unicenter systems management software, already announced for Hewlett-Packard Co, Sequent Computer Systems Inc and Novell Inc NetWare systems, is to become available on Sun and Sparc-based systems; the proprietary Masterpiece financial software, Generator development tools and CA-DB underlying database technology may also make the move across; the Islandia, New York company’s business is being hit by the slowdown in mainframe sales, while Sun, with its high-end multi-processor servers now on the market, is keen to gain more credibility in the commercial world and is currently building up its portfolio of commercial tools and applications; unlike Hewlett-Packard Co, Sun is less likely to pay up-front for the conversion work, preferring to spend the money on joint marketing.
