San Jose, California-based Cadence Design Systems Inc has started laying off about 10% of its 1,600 employees worldwide. The redundancies are due largely to overlapping functions caused by the recent acquisition of Valid Logic Systems Inc and they are expected to lead to an exceptional charge and loss for the quarter (CI No 1,773). The company says that all divisions have been affected by the reductions, but computer aided engineering and systems have been affected most severely. Electronic News says that approximately two-thirds of the people laid off were Cadence employees, and that the workforce at Cadence’s San Diego systems design facility has been cut by half.
