Cadence Design Systems Inc has acquired Esperan Ltd, a privately held UK electronic design automation training and education company from Ramsbury, Wiltshire. Cadence says the acquisition is its first in the education services area, although it has been expanding its Consulting Services operations and offers EDA courses on Cadence and third party tools. Esperan runs VHDL and Verilog hardware description language and methodology courses for ASIC and field programmable gate array designers. Financial terms were not disclosed. Esperan, which was formed six years ago and has under 20 staff, becomes a new business unit of Cadence. Meanwhile, Cadence appears to be the front-runner in the race to acquire Lucent Technologies Inc’s Bell Labs Design Automation unit (CI No 3,444), although no announcements have been made to date.
