Cabletron Systems Inc, based in Rochester, New Hampshire and Burlington, Massachusetts company Xylogics Inc have announced what they claim is the first ‘in-the-hub’ remote access module, said to provide up to 12 integrated V.32bis modems in several configurations for dial-in-dial-out network users. According to Cabletron, the Modem Module, Modmim, which is based on Xylogics’s Annex software version 8.1 and US Robotics Inc’s Courier V.32bis Terbo modem, enables terminals and serial devices to be connected directly to Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI networks through Cabletron’s Multi Media Access Centre intelligent hubs; obviating the need for external modems connected with cables to the asynchronous ports of its Communications Server Media Interface Module for the Multi Media Access Centre. The Modmim4 is a single-slot system that offers 20 ports of communications, including four modems. The product is also available as a two-slot module for the Multi Media Access Centre with an additional board and eight modems. The module is also said to provide SNMP management for both integrated and external modems. Protocols that are supported include AppleTalk Remote Access Protocol, Dial-up IP routing, Point-to-Point/Serial Line Interface Protocol, dialback security, Local Area Transport and TN3270. Future support for dial-in/dial-out users and dial-up IPX routing is planned with future enhancements to the Annex software. The Modmim will be available from July, with a price of $1,500 per port, inclusive of 16 local ports. It will be upgradable to V.34 when the standard is complete, says Cabletron.
