Cabletron Systems Inc has announced a comprehensive line of SMF Single-Mode Fibre optic Ethernet connection modules for its Multi Media Access Center – MMAC – series of smart hubs. They enable users in campus-wide networking environments to use single-mode fibre optic cabling to achieve transmission distances exceeding seven miles. The company also introduced the FOT-F3, a new IEEE 802.3/Ethernet fibre optic transceiver for connecting devices to Ethernet single-mode fibre optic networks. The new Fiber Optic Media Interface Modules – the 38, 32 and 36 – provide connectivity for up to 18, 12 and 6 nodes respectively. The modules support a number of single-mode fibre optic cabling types, including 8.3/125-12/125. They interconnect attached single-mode fibre optic cable segments through the Multi Media Access Center backplane, simultaneously providing users with access to all devices and applications on networks connected to the hub. Cabletron’s FOT-F3 transceiver is equipped with two ST connectors and a DB-15 AUI connector, connecting IEEE 802.3/Ethernet compliant network devices to Fiber Optic Media Interface – FOMIM – modules in the Multi Media Access Center hub via single-mode fibre optic cabling. Repeaters, multiport repeaters, multiport transceivers, bridges and host systems can all be connected to the hub using the FOT-F3. The Interface modules and FOT-F3 transceiver are out now from Cabletron, costing $5,250 for the FOMIM-36, $9,600 for FOMIM-32, $14,400 for the FOMIM-38. The FOT-F3 is $900.
