Rochester, New Hampshire-based Cabletron Systems has launched a 36-port Ethernet SmartSwitch for its MMAC-Plus switching platform. The new SmartSwitch, based on the company’s SmartSwitch ASIC technology, allows Cabletron customers to switch up to 500 separate Ethernet segments within a single MMAC-Plus chassis. The company claims this capability makes the MMAC-Plus the industry’s highest port-density switching platform. Other features of the new 36-port SmartSwitch include non-blocking, full-duplex IP and multi-protocol switching, with broadcast storm protection and broadcast/multicast traffic control, and RMON on every port. All of Cabletron’s SmartSwitch products support SecureFast Virtual Networking, allowing virtual routing within networks to alleviate bottlenecks. The 36-port switch module is priced at $23,995 and is available immediately.
