CABLETRON BANKS ON SMARTSWITCH

By CBR Staff Writer

Cabletron Systems Inc is looking to what is calls its new product branding strategy to help it out of its present troubles. Cabletron says it will extend its SmartSwitch brand name across a range of previously available products, in an attempt to simplify its catalogue. The products will be categorized using a numeric series that identifies the market segment toward which a product solution is targeted: SmartSwitch 9000 for the Data Center, 6000 for the Wiring Closet, 2000 for the Workgroup and 1000 for the remote office. For example, Cabletron’s MMAC-Plus becomes the SmartSwitch 9000 and ZX-80 SmartCell is renamed the SmartSwitch 250 under the new scheme. But the company’s recent acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp’s Network Products Business will see it also producing Digital-branded products.
