CABLE & WIRELESS RUNS INTO TROUBLE WITH US AUTHORITIES

Having more or less won its way with the Japanese after a tough battle, Cable & Wireless Plc now seems to have run into trouble with the US authorities on the transatlantic section of its fibre optic Global Highway: the Justice Department now says that it is definitely opposed to the Bell Operating Companies entering the overseas long-distance telephone market in principle, although it has not yet ruled on Cables’ chosen partner, Nynex Corp’s specific request for a waiver of the standing regulations.
