CABLE & WIRELESS PREDICT TELEPHONE OPERATOR CHANGES IN CHINA

By CBR Staff Writer

Having achieved that breakthrough on marine telecommunications cable services (CI No 2,396), Cable & Wireless Plc chairman Lord Young forecasts that enormous demand will lead China to lift its ban on foreign firms operating telephone services – China may choose to liberalise its telecommunications industry by opening up four or five areas and allowing different foreign firms to operate in them as minority joint venture partners, he suggested, also forecasting that one day there will be a submarine cable joining all the coastal cities of China, which he reckons would be the best way to meet the strong demand for more telephones.
