CABLE & WIRELESS PLANS GLOBAL INTERNET ACCESS SERVICE

By CBR Staff Writer

Cable & Wireless Plc is to build the world’s first globally-deployed Internet exchange network and says that by May it will start providing a high-speed access service in eight countries, using 2Mbps leased lines – making it the fastest on offer in Japan. Access points will be set up worldwide and the company’s target is 500 cities in 50 countries by 1999. Travellers will get low-cost access to their home Internet service provider without having to register with a local in each country.
