James Ross, chief executive of Cable & Wireless Plc, told Dow Jones & Co that the learning process for multimedia involves the company buying stakes in cable television operators in the UK, as well as joining in ventures in the US and Japan in other areas of telecommunications – it plans to introduce its Personal Communications Network mobile telephone service into the US with its partner in the UK venture, US West Inc; the US and Japan are special situations, he says – in the US – that’s fiercely competitive – we’re not going to make that a major region as a percentage of our total activity, but it’s a region we have to be in in order to participate in all the technological developments that are coming; Japan we feel we have to be in as a source of alliances, to serve our international customers.
