CABLE & WIRELESS GOES TO STC SUBMARINE SYSTEMS

By CBR Staff Writer

Cable & Wireless has gone to STC Submarine Systems Ltd for a$50m fibre optic cable to link Bermuda, lonely out there in the Atlantic off the US east coast, to the British Virgin Islands, 1,000 miles to the south in the Caribbean, replacing the analogue link installed on the same route by STC back in 1966 and due for completion by March 1990: 28 underwater repeaters will be needed on the new cable, which will operate at 420 Mbps to give a capacity of nearly 6,000 circuits for speech to cable TV.
