Cable & Wireless Plc is part of a consortium planning a high-capacity fibre-optic submarine cable to link 14 islands in the Caribbean: the cost of the installed system is expected to be $60m, with Cables taking a 66% stake, France Telecom 18% and AT&T Co 6% of the Eastern Caribbean Fibre System, which will cover a distance of 1,100 miles and will extend from the British Virgin Islands in the north to Trinidad in the south; construction is to start in March and service in early 1995.
