Cable & Wireless Plc and Hutchison Telecommunications Ltd are both still in the running to take over Aussat Pty Ltd and become the sole licensed competitor to Telecom Australia, but only one of the two finalists can win: Cables is partnered in the Optus Communications consortium led by BellSouth Corp with local partners Mayne Nickless Ltd, Australian Mutual Provident Society and National Mutual Life Association of Australasia Ltd, Hutchison’s partners in the Optus Communications consortium are Bell Atlantic Corp and Ameritech Corp.
