Hewlett-Packard Co chief executive Lew Platt took every opportunity at OpenView Universe 98 to address what he referred to as the CA issue. Three times in one afternoon HP executives discussed the company’s relationship with Computer Associates International Inc – which has been a source of confusion for customers, partners and just about everyone else – since it announced in August it was bundling Unicenter TNG with its 9000 series Unix servers and workstations (CI No 3,223). Platt insists that while CA is a valuable partner in the area of services, it is and will remain a sworn enemy in the area of enterprise management – that’s just the way it is in an open systems world, he said. Platt said he tells his OpenView sales force to go out and kill CA. When asked how much of the enterprise management market HP is eyeing in the next year, Platt grinned and replied all of it.
