CA has integrated its Endevor Software Change Manager and IBM’s Rational Developer for System z V7.6, a IBM Rational mainframe development environment.

The company said that the integration is designed to simplify the development and management of mainframe software by streamlining application updates, reducing change-related programming errors, and facilitating compliance audits.

With the integration, a programmer using RDz can extract the elements of an application within Endevor SCM and store the changes back into it for acceptance into the next release of the application. Its edit environment includes RDz functions such as content assist and smart syntax check along with ISPF. When completed, the changes are placed back into Endevor SCM, allowing users to take advantage of all its controls and build functionality, the company said.

According to CA, the integration enables RDz users to view CA Endevor SCM elements; retrieve CA Endevor SCM elements to an RDz project in order to take advantage of the RDz functionality; filter the RDz views by environment, system, subsystem, stage ID, and element to narrow down the number of elements that are visible at any given time; create multiple views using different combinations of environment, system, subsystem, stage ID, and element to help better organise the elements that are being accessed.

In addition, it also helps users to copy projects into Endevor SCM to leverage all its controls; use RDz to invoke Endevor SCM’s build functions; and compare the history and version of Endevor SCM elements with the RDz visual compare.

CA also unveiled common graphical user interface of InterTest for CICS r8.5 and InterTest batch r8.5, which is based on the eclipse platform. The InterTest GUI helps developers re-use and re-purpose existing mainframe application code in order to further improve productivity and support service oriented architecture (SOA) implementations.

Aline Gerew, senior vice president of software engineering for mainframe business unit at CA, said: CA continues to work closely with IBM to optimise the total business value that IT organisations can get from their investments in System z mainframe hardware and software. The integration of CA Endevor SCM and IBM’s RDz is particularly useful for development teams looking to drive computing workloads back to the mainframe in order to drive down costs and deliver superior service levels.
