C-Cube Microsystems Inc plans to unveil video compression technology that it reckons could fundamentally change the way broadcast signals and cable television programs are distributed: based on the MPEG 2 standard, the chip set offers real time compression, where other compression methods take time and delay transmission of signals, and expands threefold the number of channels an operator can send on one satellite transponder; some customers for the MPEG-2 encoder include Compression Labs Inc, and Hewlett-Packard Co, which wants it for its television set-top boxes.
