C-CUBE PUTS MPEG2 ENCODING ON A CHIP

By CBR Staff Writer

MPEG leader C-Cube Microsystems Inc’s offering its first single- chip MPEG2 encoder as DVxpert, the first product based upon the company’s new DVx architecture. C-Cube expects the chip to enable it to expand into new HDTV and advanced studio application markets where a bunch of vendors have already committed to developing digital video products using the chip which is claimed to work at 15Mbps. However C-Cube also believes the part will open up a new cost- and space-sensitive consumer electronics market for recordable DVD-PCs and players, off-line editing, two- way set-top devices, digital VCRs and next generations of camcorders. Sample quantities are available now, volume shipments begin next quarter.
