Japanese Victor Co and C-Cube Microsystems Inc, San Jose have been showing off what they reckon is the first Moving Pictures Expert Group video decoder-processor chip, says Microbytes Daily. The standard compresses motion video at rates of up to 50 to one and the prototype decompress digital video in real time. It will also implement the Japanese company’s JVC Extended algorithm which enhances MPEG with transfer rate, after decompression of 4Mbps to 6Mbps against 1.2Mbps. JVC Extended can handle four times the number of pixels specified by MPEG, because MPEG is good enough for windowed broadcast-quality video but not fast enough for broadcast-quality, full-screen video.
