Companies almost always embark on the painful process of downsizing their operations in face of changing market conditions in the confident belief that one quick fix will do it – but it never works that way and Wang Laboratories Inc is having to make yet more cuts in its workforce. It plans to lay off more than 1,000 more people from its 13,500-strong workforce – a pale shadow of the 31,500 in March 1989, and says that even more cuts may be needed in the next several months. Wang said that revenue from the new deal under which it buys RS/6000s OEM from IBM Corp, and also markets AS/400s, are starting to increase.
