…BUT AS MANY AS 20% OF THE WORKFORCE COULD GO IN NEW CUTS

On Apple Computer Inc’s imminent shake-up, the same source hears that the company may cut as many as 3,000 jobs – more than 20% of its worldwide work force of 14,000 – in the next 10 days. The restructuring is expected to reverberate through all parts of the company, with the Enterprise Systems Division seen as being among those hardest hit. Also under examination are all projects within Apple’s Advanced Technology Group, MacWeek hears, and product managers are being asked to submit proposals justifying their development efforts, with one source saying that the PenMac pen-based PowerBook Duo project has been killed off.
