Businessland Inc, the San Jose company that is already the biggest computer retailer in the US owning all its outlets, is taking a big step further in its ambitions to dominate the market with agreement to acquire Springfield, New Jersey-based Data Systems Computer Centre Inc. The company operates only five retail stores, but has a big direct sales operation that markets IBM PS/2s and Apple Computer Inc Macintoshes to large corporate customers in the New York area, particularly banks and financial institutions. As a result the company is doing annual business of close to $100m and says that it is profit-able. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. San Jose, California-bassed Businessland hit the headlines when it agreed to become the US distributor for the NeXT Computer System from Steve Jobs’ NeXT Inc and made very ambitious claims for the volume of business it would do with the sleek black Magnesium-cased optical disk-backed box.
