Having swooped into the UK to snap up Granada’s Business Centres, Oakland, California computer retailer Businessland Inc has quickly moved to expand its UK empire, and has acquired the assets of the Anderson Jacobson Ltd distribution business of the troubled US company on undisclosed terms. Businessland will operate the unit as a new subsidiary, BL Distribution Ltd (hasn’t it heard that the initials BL in the UK summon up the image of the one locally-owned motor manufacturer when it was at its most run-down and unloved?) The end-user business of Anderson Jacobson will be integrated into its existing subsidiary, Businessland (UK) Ltd. Anderson Jacobson Inc is selling because it wants to concentrate on its primary business of selling data communication products around the world. Anderson Jacobson markets IBM, Compaq and other personal computers from its business centre in Slough, as well as distributing equipment from Zenith, Racal Dana, Toshiba and its parent to dealers from the Slough office and from another in Birmingham. Turnover is around UKP7.5m.
