The Paris-based software maker is teaming up with companies like Hewlett-Packard Co, BEA Systems Inc, Openwave Systems Inc and KXEN Inc to develop subscriber and operational management analytic and reporting applications for communications service providers.
Business Objects worked closely with HP to develop a process-aware BI application called Business Objects Telecom Activation with HP OpenView that tracks, manages and optimizes mobile phone activation processes.
It has also extended BEA’s WebLogic Service Delivery Platform communications infrastructure with analytics and reporting to provide greater visibility into third-party content usage and user experience. For example, companies can monitor the use of ring tone downloads to increase customer retention.
Meanwhile Openwave, which manages detailed mobile network content and network profiles is using Business Objects’ BI software to drive more personalized services through a deeper understanding of subscriber behavior and trends and to drive more profitable location based advertising and services.
Business Objects is also partnering with data mining specialist KXEN to develop forward looking BI applications that incorporate predictive analytics into operational BI dashboards.
The suite of vertical applications, which are sold separately, package up various parts of Business Objects’ BI and data integration stack, explained Rani Goel, director of communications industry marketing at Business Objects.
She said the applications represented the next generation of BI application for communications providers.
All the tier one communications firms have a decent BI infrastructure in place today. But changes caused by the consolidation, migration of services means that providers need to look at historical and transactional and combine with what’s happening in their processes in real-time.
The advent of IP services means they need to know a lot more granular detail of how their customers using services, she said. This also calls for tighter intelligence and controls on processes.
The top 30 communications firms in the world use Business Object according to Goel.
The jointly developed HP and BEA applications are available now. But Business Objects is putting the finishing touches on the remaining two.
These should be ready soon since Business Objects already OEM’s KXEN (as part of its Performance Management suite) and Openwave’s technology.
We’re now enhancing these base level solutions, Goel said.
Business Objects’ communications focus is part of a strategy by the company to verticalize its BI technologies. Earlier this year it unveiled a new vertical offering targeted at the healthcare and life sciences sectors that was developed in conjunction with IBM Corp.
