Groupe Bull SA’s Zenith Data Systems is launching a new line of personal computers and monitors aimed at the consumer-oriented home-and-office market. The line includes four desktop personal computers equipped with data-facsimile modems, four monitors and a notebook-size system. The machines were launched at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, marketed through US national and speciality mass-market retailers ra ther than through the company’s traditional network of personal computer resellers. Available in April, the new models start with a 16MHz 80386SX-based system with an 85Mb hard drive costing $1,500. At the top of the line is an expandable 25MHz 80486SX system with ultr-high resolution video capability and a 120Mb hard drive. Without a monitor, it is $2,700. The new monitors range from a 14 black-and-white VGA unit for $120 to a 15 multi-frequency monitor capable of VGA, Super VGA and ultra-high resolution video output. The new notebook weighs in at 6.5 lbs, uses a 20MHz 80386SX processor and has a 60Mb hard drive. It will cost around $2,500. And Spinnaker Software Corp’s PFS:WindowWorks version 1.1 will be bundled with the new Zenith products, in a similar deal to one Spinnaker has with Philips Consumer Electronics NV.
