The UK Minister for Health, David Mellor, became the first official user of Bull HN Information Systems Care Card when he launched its trial at a surgery in Exmouth, Devon (CI No 942): the Care Card is a CP8 smart card containing a 16K-bit chip into which details of the patient’s medical history are fed; this data can then be examined by the patient via a terminal at the doctor’s surgery, or by authorised professionals using a key Care Card and a Personal Identification Number; the card should reduce the amount of paperwork involved in running a surgery, and keep the patient accurately informed about their individual medical records.
