BT announced the news in a brief statement, which stated that the transition should be complete by autumn.

GE Healthcare assumed the role of software subcontractor to BT when it acquired IDX Systems Corp, which originally won the award, in September 2005. This June, a government audit found that BT had entered into a subcontract with IDX that meant that IDX was not incentivized or focused on the timely delivery of quality solutions.

The decision is good news for Cerner, which initially didn’t win any major software awards under the $10bn-plus NHS Connecting for Health program. But in June 2005, Fujitsu Services, which was running the program’s $1.6bn contract for Southern region, also booted IDX off the project and brought in Cerner to takeover the subcontract, estimated at $400m to $480m, according to an Associated Press report.
