British Telecommunications Plc has pledged UKP3m to a university-based research programme, announced a series of fellowship schemes and established an Master of Science degree, to be taught at its laboratories in Martlesham, Suffolk; the research is all aimed at improving and developing telecommunications; universities will be granted around UKP1m each, under a programme in which they will have to tender – so far Oxford and Strathclyde universities have won places: altogether Telecom will devote 8% of its UKP50m corporate research budget to developing academic research links.
