British Telecommunication Plc will provide schoolchildren with free access to the internet if the UK’s Labour government changed the regulatory framework of broadcasting, which at the moment bars the company from entering the field, British Telecom said. Such a deal was struck with the Labour party two years ago when they were in opposition but after six weeks in power the new government has yet to move in that direction. While waiting for the government to make a decision, British Telecom is negotiating with Oftel, the UK telecommunications regulator, on the price it should charge schools for internet access.
