BT offers Wi-Fi to happy campers

UK holiday parks get connected

By Steve Evans

BT Openzone has announced it will be offering Wi-Fi services to holiday and leisure parks across the UK, helping people stay connected during their summer holiday.

BT has struck a deal with Wicoms to offer connectivity services to 77 Camping and Caravanning Club sites, three Pontin’s sites plus locations at Coastfields Leisure sites in Skegness.

According to research by Moneysupermarket.com, the recession is forcing many Brits into staying here for their summer holiday – with 50,000 visitors expected at the sites covered by this deal.

As well as enabling holiday makers to keep up to date with emails and news, the Wi-Fi services should provide extra entertainment if the summer proves to be a wash-out. “Having the option to get online and stay entertained will provide a useful ‘plan B’ if the weather does its worst, and being able to look up tourist information and hunt out local gems will make for a better trip,” said Chris Bruce, general manager, BT Openzone.

Users will be able to access a BT Openzone landing page through any wireless-enabled device. BT broadband customers can use the service at no extra charge and non-BT customers can by vouchers to get online.

Simon Davies, chief technology officer, Wicoms, said: “Lots of Brits have stayed in the UK rather than head overseas this year. Families tell us that holiday sites are another location where they want to get online. Teenagers and gadget addicts are set to be heavy users.”

As well as the new holiday park locations, BT also recently signed a deal with Starbucks to provide Wi-Fi to customers at the coffee chain’s 650 stores. BT will also be offering Wi-Fi services at automated telling machines (ATMs) around the UK as part of a deal with Cashbox.
