Green, 52, will take over from acting CEO Jim McKenna at the beginning of next year. He is a veteran of BT of more than 20 years and has been a board member since 2001. He rose to prominence when he was named as head of the Global Services division in 2001 and just six months ago, he was named as chief executive of group strategy and operations.

His tenure at the helm of BT Global Services must be considered a success. The operation’s revenue doubled to 9bn pounds ($18bn) during that time, as it got to grips better than any operator in bridging the narrowing gap between telecoms and IT services. Green oversaw a string of major network management deals with clients such as Reuters, Unilever, and Credit Suisse, as well as an aggressive M&A program.

LogicaCMG’s shareholders had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a senior industry figure since long-term leader Martin Read announced plans to step down in May when the company issued a profit warning relating to problems at its UK operation.

The company’s shares rose 9.3% in morning trading on the London Stock Exchage following the announcement of Green’s appointment, giving it a market capitalization of 2.4bn pounds ($4.8bn).
