British Telecommunications Plc’s Aeronautical and Maritime A&M division is launching a new service to enable users to access the internet and communicate by email from anywhere in the world. The BT Internet Global Service begins operation next month. It will initially be aimed at users in the energy, shipping and media sector, and at users of personal satellite terminals for worldwide internet roaming by the middle of the year. The service will use BT’s Concert international network with 700 points of access in 50 countries with satellite links from remote locations. Charges will average $3.50 a minute with costs higher where satellite networks are used. A&M plans a range of new products during the year including a plug and play service that will enable airline passengers to plug their laptop into a console in the seat and send and receive email.
