British Telecom has increased telephone charges for international calls, while local and national calls, exchange line rentals and calls from payphones remain the same for another year: international direct dial calls increase by an average of 2.3%, with calls to the US going up about 2.9%, while calls to some European countries go down and charges to France, Germany and Holland will stay the same; economy rate call charges to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore will be reduced, charges for international operator services will increase by about 2.6%, telephone rentals rise by 20p per quarter and the company plans to introduce charges for its UK directory enquiries service, based on Computer Consoles Inc Unix machines sometime in the future, excluding blind and other disabled customers who have special need of the directory enquiry service – and there will be no charge from public call boxes.
