In a new twist on the multimedia kiosk theme, British Telecommunications Plc and Photo-Me International are to start building passport photo booths that can also offer email and internet access. The firms will initially replace 1,000 booths, typically found in UK railway stations and shopping centers, with the new designs. Customers can use the booths to send or receive email at 20 pence ($0.32), or connect to the web for one pound ($1.61) for 10 minutes. The machines will accept cash and smart cards. The firms will split the advertising revenues from the machines, as well as the cost of building them. BT will provide the network services to the booths.
