BT launches ‘smartphone for the home’

Home SmartPhone SII bridges gap between smartphone and traditional landline.

By Alexander Sword

BT has launched the Home SmartPhone SII, a home phone with smartphone features such as apps and internet browsing.

The device aims to provide households with another connected device, allowing members to get online through home wi-fi. The Android-enabled home phone connects to Google Play to provide access to applications.

Running on Android 4.2, it also provides 2GB of expandable memory, with a front-facing camera and built-in music player. It also has BT’s Nuisance Call Blocking feature, debuted on the BT6500.

The device aims to bridge the gap between the modern smartphone and the traditional landline phone, with the rise of tablets demonstrating a demand for a portable device within the home.

Erik Raphael, Director of Wi-fi and Devices at BT, said: "We are extremely pleased to be adding Google Play to our Home SmartPhone SII which opens up access to the biggest app store available.

"The home smartphone provides an excellent solution for getting everyone in the family online whenever they need access. The Home SmartPhone SII makes the home phone central to family life again, allowing you to look up numbers online and communicate with friends and family via email, Facebook or calls."
