Unix house Berkeley Software Design Inc, Colorado Springs, Colorado, is offering a new 3.0 version of its Internet server. It comes with a new MaxIm graphical administration manager, an enhanced TCP/IP implementation, Netscape FastTrack and Apache Web servers, Netscape SuiteSpot, a 10-user license to Software.com’s Post.Office and sendmail electronic mail servers, the Raima Velcois database and the Java Development Kit. The new version uses the company’s own Unix kernel, and is up on Intel boxes from $1,000. Berkeley Systems claims 12 minutes install and 15 minutes configuration time for what is essentially a local area netwok product. In January the company plans to begin selling a series of packaged products based on the Internet server and other code for Network Computer appliances, mail, file transfer protocol and Web serving. It’s also readying a version of its Internet Gateway for Novell networks it says will enable NetWare users to access all Winsock applications and groupware over the net without requiring each users to have an individual IP address. BSDI says that while Novell is pushing IP in its IntranetWare, NetWare, technologies Novell IP software takes up so much memory on the client that there’s precious little left for other applications. Breaking down some parts of its business, privately-held BSDI says 20% of its revenue comes from enterprise customers, 5% from embedded sites and a declining 35% from Internet Service Providers, formerly a full half of its business.
