Brocade shows off latest SDN controller

The Vyatta Controller is based on OpenDaylight technology.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Brocade has introduced a virtual controller as the networking specialist further strengthens its software-defined networking (SDN) portfolio.

The Vyatta Controller controls switches, routers and firewalls among other elements of the network, and is based on code from the latest "Helium" release of the OpenDaylight project, the company said.

The OpenDaylight project, formed in April 2013, aims to build a common and open SDN platform for developers to utilise, contribute and build commercial products and technologies.

Brocade, which has been an active participant in OpenDaylight, said the open source approach would minimise vendor lock-in and provide, allowing customers to add functionality on top of the controller.

"Network architects and data centre engineers have been trained to manage the complexities dictated by vendors," said Kelly Herrell, VP and GM Software Networking at Brocade.

"The Brocade Vyatta Controller is the first commercially supported open source solution to remove that vendor lock-in from the network and allow the user to deliver the innovation that the network needs."

Brocade plans to release the Vyatta Controller in November.
