According to Broadcom, this single-chip transcoder enables consumer devices to share video and audio content, while maintaining digital rights management and security. Transcoder is software that converts files from one format to another.
The company said that the BCM7043 provides the foundational technology for encoding and transcoding content in devices such as IPTV and terrestrial set-top boxes, portable media players, mobile phones, digital video recorders, Blu-ray disc and PCs. It also provides encoding and transcoding foundation for future devices that support H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4SP video compression.
Broadcom claims that the solution is capable of real-time, simultaneous quad-channel standard definition (SD) encoding and transcoding and offers SD content transcoding to lower resolutions at up to six times faster than real-time.
The company said that the industry research indicates that there is a strong desire by consumers to easily connect their entertainment devices within a home network. As a result, the need has emerged for a fast, efficient, high quality, yet flexible transcoding solution that can change the format, the bit rate and the resolution of audio/video content in real-time.
The company added that the price of the chip will be available upon request for manufactures of cable, satellite and IPTV set-top boxes.
On the same day, Texas Instruments also introduced a single-chip, real-time HD video transcoding solution with DaVinci technology for media gateways, multi-point control units, digital media adaptors, video security DVRs and IP set-top boxes.
