Irvine, California-based Broadcom said the acquisition will accelerate its time to market and competitive position. It quoted research firm In-Stat/MDR’s prediction that it should reach a volume of 90 million units a year by 2008.

Zeevo, which is based in Santa Clara, California, is only the latest in a series of acquisitions by Broadcom. Last September, it bought Alphamosaic Ltd from Cambridge in the UK for its mobile imaging, multimedia and 3G graphics; in June it acquired Zyray Wireless Inc from San Diego, for its baseband co-processor, and in April it bought both Widcomm Inc from San Diego (Bluetooth software) and Sand Video Inc of Andover, Massachusetts (video compression).
