Communications processor company Broadcom Corp has acquired Armedia Inc, a fabless semiconductor company from Bangalore in India. Broadcom will pay $67m for the company, buying 702,000 shares of its stock. Armedia, which has concentrated on digital video chips and software, including MPEG decoders, will be used by Broadcom to expand its product development efforts. One of the motivations behind the deal was to give Broadcom a direct means of recruiting Indian design staff. A new company, Broadcom India Private Ltd, will be formed and will introduce Broadcom products onto the Indian market. Armedia has around 50 staff.
