BRITTON-LEE TRIES NEW MARKETING APPROACH FIRST IN EUROPE

By CBR Staff Writer

New management and a recent return to modest profits (CI No 991) have inspired Los Gatos-based Britton-Lee Inc to re-assemble a number of existing products in a bid to penetrate new commercial markets – with the prioneering work being done in Europe before the concept is repeated in the US and the Far East. The company plans to target an entry-level package comprising its BL 300 shared database system, host software, Freeform 4GL applications generator and PC/SQL link at what it describes as departmental MS-DOS micro network environments – estate agents, retail chains, and the petrochemical market – with a similar high-end offering, based on its BL 700 system, to be pitched at large banks and government departments. Corporate marketing will highlight the dedicated nature of the database machine, which, according to European chief Jan Nordhagen, provides unrivalled data security, multi-vendor compatibility, and the capacity to service anything from 20 to 400 users. Prices for the products, to be the subject of a series of key European presentations at the end of next month, will range from UKP37,350 to UKP254,000.
