BRITISH TELECOM TEAMS FOR SPANISH CELLULAR BID

By CBR Staff Writer

British Telecommunications Plc and its Spanish partner Banco Santander SA announced yesterday that they have teamed up with Ameritech Corp to form the Airtel consortium to bid for the cellular operator licence to be offered in Spain. Two licences are expected to be granted, but one is expected to be reserved for Telefonica de Espana SA. The consortium will be formally established within four to six weeks and is open to other members. Spain last year granted five licences for data transmission services, and one went to Santander with British Telecom.
