British Telecommunications Plc has expanded on the very low key commercial launch of Phonepoint, which to all intents and purposes was on August 15 – initially with 30 Phonepoints live in Central London – dotted around the West End and the City. The company had announced agreements with Midland Bank, Nationwide Building Society, Bass Plc, Courage, and Littlewoods Stores and it yesterday revealed that the Automobile Association, British Rail, London Buses, the Post Office, and Manchester Airport also have site agreements. These latest additions bring the number of sites to 36,000, including those established in July, with TrustHouse Forte and Granada Service Stations (CI No 1,216) Phonepoint telephones can be bought from British Telecom dealers and distributors, Phonepoint, or from several base-station shops. The handsets are UKP195 and subscription charges are UKP10.35 a month, plus 15 pence a minute for calls.
